Illustrative Mold Insert: Deep Features and Process Sequence
Illustrative engineering scenario — not a customer project or measured production result. This hypothetical brief explains questions that can arise during drawing review. It does not describe a completed SUUXIANG order.
A deep feature in a tool-steel insert can require more than one operation. The important decision is not whether CNC or EDM sounds more advanced, but where each process best protects geometry, access and inspection.
Hypothetical drawing brief
Consider a hypothetical replacement cavity insert with a deep internal form, narrow corner regions and a hardened final condition. The drawing identifies fit faces and one cavity surface but leaves heat-treatment state, allowable EDM surface condition and electrode access unclear. No customer, tooling program or achieved result is represented here.
Questions before quotation
What is the controlling steel grade and heat-treatment condition? Which faces establish the insert in the mold? Are corner radii functional or simply drawing defaults? Is the cavity surface to be polished, textured or left as machined? Is an existing mating component available for fitting review? Which revision of the surrounding mold governs the replacement?
Possible manufacturing route
A feasible route might involve stock and datum preparation, CNC roughing while material is suitable, an allowance for treatment or stress relief, then EDM or grinding for features and fit surfaces that cannot be reached efficiently by milling. Electrode design, spark gap, recast considerations and finishing allowance would be evaluated against the actual drawing. Another part may justify a very different sequence.
Inspection and release discussion
Acceptance could include the locating faces, cavity geometry and specified surface requirement, with methods chosen for access and uncertainty. The buyer should define whether a dimensional report, material record, fit check or first-article review is needed. No universal tolerance or tool-life improvement is asserted.
Apply this to your actual part
A real process plan can be proposed only after the current drawing, model, revision, material, quantity and acceptance requirements are reviewed. No tolerance, cost, lead time or performance result is implied by this example. Contact SUUXIANG with your project brief.
